Translation

Translation into excellent, effective English

Whether you are looking for a translation from German into English or Dutch into English, you have come to the right place. With over 25 years of experience, I guarantee you will be hard-pressed to find a better translator. This is not arrogance. It is a simple combination of experience and passion. It is just my thing.

Translation is more than just finding the corresponding words in the target language. It combines skill and understanding of rhythm and reason, culture and the writer’s intent. And that comes only with experience. A native Englishman, I have lived in both the Netherlands and Germany for well over a decade. I get it.

Native speakers don’t always cut it

Don’t get me wrong. You should always use a native speaker of the target language for your translations. But just because someone is a native speaker does not mean that they are a good translator. I would not make a good accountant, but I can write. There are all sorts of pitfalls to writing. Creativity and flow are essential. Make sure you choose a writer for your translations.

Human versus machine

Translation engines are amazing. They really are – especially the latest AI-based solutions. But they have their place and their shortcomings. Sure, large documents with solely technical material benefit from machines’ consistency, and I would advise you to find an agency using Trados, or the like. But if your texts include any human emotion or cultural trans-creation, or if you are handling topics that are especially sensitive, you are better off sticking with the human touch.

I just enjoy translating, it’s like opening one’s mouth and hearing someone else’s voice emerge.”
